CBW227910 - Build Custom User Interfaces and Interactions for Dynamo Up and Running with MVVM form Dynamo Extensions. Never heard of a View Model? Not sure what Model-View-ViewModel means, and why MVVM has so many V’s in it? This developer workshop will get you ready to program your own creative extensions for Dynamo, by first helping you understand the structure of Dynamo itself. We’ll introduce WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) for making a GUI, and we will implement the MVVM design pattern to list and save keyboard shortcuts. Then, we will see the same design pattern in the Dynamo source code, albeit at a much more complicated level. Finally, you will integrate your keyboard shortcut dialog into Dynamo itself using the extension framework. We’ll improve the user experience in Dynamo, speeding up graph development for everyone. 270 Minutes Pre-conference Session Sol Amour

CBW227911 - Control Dynamo from the Web Join this breakout session to learn how to build Dynamo extensions from scratch and why they're so powerful. We'll showcase this by building an extension that embeds a web server & REST API inside Dynamo, allowing users to remotely open & run graphs, extract results, add/remove nodes, & more, all from a web browser. We’ll start by exploring the structure & concepts of a Dynamo extension through annotated code samples. Using the Dynamo API, we’ll then learn how to build up our extension in a modular way, so that we can collaboratively add new features to our extension. By the end, we’ll have turned Dynamo into a service that everyone at your practice can use by simply visiting a web page. 270 Minutes Pre-conference Session Mark Thorley

The intelligent models needed to be centralized and collaborate with several design teams across different offices throughout the United States and South America. We'll present our approaches, challenges (there were undoubtedly plenty), and solutions from project kickoff through construction. BIM 360 Docs software became the single source of truth for a large and complex project. Autodesk products used in the project include BIM 360 Docs, BIM 360 Glue software, BIM 360 Field software, Revit 2018 software, and Navisworks Manage 2018 software. 90 Minutes Pre-conference Session Brendan Dillon

CCS226503 - Generative Urban Design: A Collaboration Between Autodesk Research and Van Wijnen Autodesk Research’s in-house architectural studio, The Living, is a pioneer in the application of generative-design technology. They have completed successful projects for Airbus—the famous bionic partition for the A320—and internal to Autodesk, including both the design of the new office in Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District and the exhibit hall layout for last year’s Autodesk University. In late 2016, The Living was approached by Van Wijnen, an innovative Dutch construction company interested in reinventing the way the firm built homes. Van Wijnen wanted to apply generative design at the urban scale, exploring possibilities around the layout of residential areas based on financial, sociological, or environmental metrics. Speakers from Autodesk Research will present the concept behind the project and details of the Dynamo-based tool that Van Wijnen uses for new layouts. Additionally, a speaker from Van Wijnen will talk about how the tool is used and has changed the way the firm approaches urban planning projects. 90 Minutes Pre-conference Session Lorenzo Villaggi

CCS256042 - Connected Problem Solving: Construction’s New Perspective on VR

Immersive technology in construction has largely been defined as the use of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality or Mixed Reality tools to visualize proposed designs, identify and improve space planning, or to communicate design intent to a greater community. Unfortunately, disproven workflows during the construction phase on unproven hardware represent too great of a risk for construction firms to invest in either. As a result, most firms have been left with a fragmented, disconnected ecosystem where the vast majority of value added use cases have yet to be discovered. It’s frustrating. We hear you.

It makes sense that a potential solution would be collaborative, centered on the AEC industry, and focused on quantified value. Ideally, it would be cloud-based, have data at the center, and leverage Autodesk’s Forge APIs together with partner solutions to finally achieve VR scalability for AEC customers. Please join us and experience connected problem solving in a new and exciting way.

FDC221650 - Structuring an API-Heavy App: Best Practices and Lessons Learned What do I wish I’d known when I first developed an app using application programming interfaces? Getting the architecture of your app right is important—and if you’re building an app that consumes APIs, this can be even more critical. By using techniques to separate out the code that connects to the API from what matters most—your business logic—you can easily build testability, resiliency, and flexibility around the API you consume—while keeping your business logic free from API changes. You will leave this talk with examples of why this separation is important, specific examples of patterns to use, and what to anticipate could go wrong when good patterns are not used. 60 Minutes Industry Talk Dorothy Thurston

FDC226768 - Using a Work Breakdown Structure and BIM 360 for Effective Labor Delivery and Control "Managing the risk in labor costs on a construction project is critical to the success of any contractor. Using a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) based on the model during pre-construction helps ensure thoroughness of the design and budget, and serves as an early foundation for effective cost management. This establishes benchmarks against which to measure and verify during construction. Effective labor management requires documenting and verifying against these benchmarks on what was installed and how efficiently. Construction projects can be complex and fast paced making it additionally challenging to collect accurate information about the status of a project. Through the Forge Platform, contractors can leverage BIM 360, WBS, and an integrated labor delivery process to help measure productivity. In this presentation, we will discuss how this creates a vital link between design, estimating and project management and the many benefits of including this data within the model." 60 Minutes Industry Talk Benny Baltrotsky

AS224425 - Augmented Reality and Reality Capturing: The Coming Age of Radical Design Collaboration Modern communication lets people to talk to each other almost anywhere at any time. But using audio and video conferencing is very different than face-to-face communication. In this talk, we will show how we can use augmented reality (AR), reality capturing, and Autodesk technologies to create new types of connected design collaboration experiences that overcome limitations of traditional technology. We will share how to turn intelligent models with 3ds Max software into immersive experiences. We will show how 3D capture technology lets 3D models of people be captured and transmitted to different locations. When combined with AR displays such as Microsoft HoloLens, these technologies let users see, hear, and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they were actually present in the same physical space, and at the same time collaborate with 3D design models. This enables engineers to collaborate over distance, provides a deeper understanding of the design, and enables better-informed decisions in less time. 60 Minutes Industry Talk Marc Sleegers

AS226654 - Cross-Platform Unitized Curtain Wall The curtain wall tool is one of the most powerful features in Revit. When it’s done right, it can drive efficiency from design to contract administration. Façade design inherently lends itself to modularity and repeatability—which makes the scope of building envelopes the ideal testing ground for new techniques in parametric design, as well as design computation. Thinking about and modeling modular elements in a manner similar to the way they'll ultimately be fabricated not only makes the documentation process smoother, but also educates young architects as they design. At NBBJ we've developed an ecosystem of tools and processes to make curtain wall design an easier and more nimble process. We recognize that designers prefer a variety of tools and that different software have different strengths. In this presentation, we'll demonstrate strategies and tools we use to create parity and enable interoperability between the programs we use for façade design. 60 Minutes Industry Talk Nate Holland

AS226820 - Resilient Design with Triple-Bottom-Line-Enhancing BIM By standardizing data, methodologies, and output, the triple bottom line (TBL) can augment BIM (Building Information Modeling) (6D = 3D + cost + schedule + TBL). Automation of triple-bottom-line cost-benefit analysis (TBL-CBA) means that TBL-augmented BIM can bring high-performance building design, resiliency, and sustainability to smaller and smaller design decisions. Computational design needs a guiding algorithm that aligns with owners, infrastructure users, community, and environmental values. Civil engineers must understand stakeholders’ expectations to keep projects on schedule. We will provide examples of how cities have used TBL-CBA to prioritize infrastructure projects.
